To live your passion, you need to stop!

You know it is often a struggle for me to stay focused. With so much of going on in life, I get overwhelmed by things and end up loosing focus. I would suspect that this kind of things happens to others as well.

I don’t have a “sure-fire” solution or a “five step plan” to stay focused when life gets away from you. However, I do have some advice. The advice is simply to not be afraid to stop!

  1. Stop and smell the roses – there is no dress rehearsal in life. Every day you live is the only day you are assured of. The past cannot be changed and the future is not guaranteed.
  2. Stop and get rested – the world moves at such a fast pace, if you don’t stay rested you can loose yourself in the traffic.
  3. Stop and pray, think, and plan – God has a plan for your life, but you need to be constantly looking for the daily direction to fulfill that plan. This takes time and energy, but is absolutely necessary to keep you on track and on time!

I know I have to stop and when I do these are the things I try to do. If you are out of focus, maybe these thoughts will work for you.

Twas the Night Before Easter

Twas the night before Easter ….

If you thought I was going to dream up some fancy poem, I’m sorry to disappoint you. But, I am sitting here the night before Easter and thinking a lot about what that first resurrection Sunday and how it has effected the history of the world in general and my life in particular.

When I look at the news, hear stories of the day, and watch a world that seems out of control, my mind is filled with questions about the resurrection and why so many who could have peace have chosen to have turmoil. You see, Jesus came into the world to share the love of God with all who would hear about and accept it. That love of God is seen best in the resurrection where the risen Saviour made eternal life available to everyone who would repent and believe.

The alternative is to live in the chaos of this world and to be driven by the desires of humanity to do what they are incapable of doing and that is to bring peace on earth and good will to men. Sin hates and can never be tamed apart from the work of the Lord Jesus Christ. Only in our repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ can we be truly freed from the world’s chaos and enjoy life and that more abundant.

So, as the night before Easter fast becomes Easter morning, may the love of God and the peace that it brings envelop your soul and bring a quiet contentment to your living!

Happy Easter to one and all!

Life out of the fast lane!

Do you ever feel like the speed of life controls you rather than the other way? I know I do! When things get this way, there are only three options as I see it.

1. You can just allow the speed of life to dictate things to you. This will make you a victim rather than a victor.
2. You can work at being more disciplined with your time and live under the pressure of your own skill-set.
3. You can live life out of the fast lane. This will require a new understanding of what life is about and a willingness to live more simply and perhaps with less.

As always the choice is yours/mine. Where and how will we choose to live life?

My strategy – Pray, Listen, Pray, Think, Do

As a Pastor and a business owner, I am often confronted by the stresses associated with “growth.” A church needs new growth to help expand ministries and do more to make God real in its community and of course businesses need to grow to become viable and to make a difference to clients, customers, and, as with churches, the community.

So, when considering the whole idea of growth, those in the know tell me that I need a growth strategy.  According to the dictionary a strategy is, “a plan, method, or series of maneuvers or stratagems for obtaining a specific goal or result.” With this definition in mind I have developed a five part strategy to produce growth:

1. Pray – God knows everything and so I need to consult him first. He promises that if I do, he will order my steps and make my life to prosper at his hand.

2. Listen – Once I have taken my inquiry to the Lord, I need to wait on him to open my eyes to his direction and will. Sometimes this comes immediately and sometimes this takes a little while. Either way I should not move until I listen for and “hear” his thoughts on the matter.

3. Pray – After I am comfortable that I have listened and heard the mind of the Spirit on the matter, I need to pray some more. In this time of prayer, I will be making sure that the directions I believe that have come from God are indeed from him and not from “other voices” that invade my thought processes. This praying make take the form of a single prayer in which God’s Spirit gives clear understanding to proceed or it may take a little time to get that clear and confident understanding.

4. Think – Now, I have clear direction, a God directed strategy and the indication from the Lord that this is the way to go. Next step – THINK! Notice I didn’t say question. In this stage I simply want to get comfortable with God’s direction and make sure I can implement it as he wants it done. Running off “half-cocked” is never a good idea. Following ALL of God’s directions is!

5. Do – If you never implement your strategy, you will never grow. (Not as a church, not as a business, not as a person.) God never gives us a plan, confirms that plan, and refines the implementation of the plan for us to put it on a shelf and never follow through. No strategy is effective if it is not implemented.

Now, you may not be trying to grow a church or a business, but all of us should be trying to grow an effective and powerful life (You were designed for greatness). If you will implement this general strategy that provides for direction from the Lord, you life will be one of passion and purpose.

Hope this helps ….

Another Saturday Night

Well, its another Saturday night. The past week has screamed by and I am trying find myself sitting quietly trying to recover and remember everything that happened. I don’t know how many people find themselves in this situation, but I seem to be here more and more often. I keep thinking that one day things have to slow down …… but not so far.

With all that seems to constantly crowd out the quiet, I have to remember to take time every day to bring it back in and to let the peace of God rule in my heart. The work is good and the busyness is sometimes necessary, but so is the quiet. At the end of the day, if we let busy push out quiet, we loose.

1. We loose in the area rest. When our minds are super busy and we don’t take time to be quiet our sleep is hindered and our restfulness departs. We live tired and mostly cranky. No quiet, no rest.

2. We loose in the area of concentration. When we don’t have that time for quiet, our minds get overworked and we loose the ability to concentrate on nearly anything. That’s why we watch so much television. It is something we can do to pass time without have to think/concentrate. No quiet no concentration.

3. We loose in the area of relationships. When we fail to take time for quiet, we get so worked up about life that relationships become secondary to the craziness of everything else. No quiet, no relationships.

Look, I know that, for the most part, we can all handle some stress in our lives, but when we don’t take time to release the stress through quiet, we leave ourselves vulnerable to dangerous levels. Take some time this week and just be quiet!

Changing Gears

Hi all! I know that it has been a while since I have written. My life is ever evolving and I find myself getting caught up in the speed and busyness of this world without even realizing it until I look around and weeks have gone by. That is what has happened to my blogging efforts here.

This morning I am making a commitment to slow down again and write.

What can you expect as I write here? You can expect my commentary on life, the events of the day, and the need for all of us to take a deep breath and enjoy the world we have been given. I am not going to be the kind of commentator that spends his time trying to scare you or cause you to see the “dark cloud behind every silver lining.” I am going to talk about life, rest, hope and peace.

You will also see many blog posts from the past disappear (as well as whole categories and tags). I am not going to worry about SEO, keywords (long or short tailed ones), or how to “monetize” this site. This blog is personal now and I my only goal is to create friendships that last a lifetime from right here in front of my keyboard. Let’s enjoy the journey together!

What in the world is going on?

Can you believe the past couple weeks? People and their pent up issues are seemingly exploding all over the world! Repressive governments are being targeted (oh wait, I can’t use that word … oh well you know what I mean) and yesterday I saw a protest where people were asked what they were protesting and they didn’t even know. They were just protesting whatever was being protested!(This was a protest here in the US)

While I am not trying to pass judgment on anyone’s right to petition their government for a redress of grievances (I think I read that somewhere before), but I think that if you are going to protest, you ought to at least know what you are for/against.

Anyway its been a crazy couple weeks and I don’t know if anyone really knows what’s coming next. All I know is that the way to make things better for me is to improve who I am, help others who want to improve do the same, and become an evangelist for this kind of interdependent help for those who don’t know/understand that it is available.

Crazy weeks cause crazy thoughts!

Till later ….

New purpose same old me!

I have been working online for about 2 years now. Like most new online people I have been tossed about by all the gurus out here. I have been like the guy who reads Golf Magazine and changes their swing every month because of the latest article about how to hit longer and straighter.

I have been guilty of building this blog just like that. Changing course way to often and not having a consistency that produces results valuable to you my reader or me as a writer. With that in mind, I want to announce a change to DaveWellman.net.

As of today, DaveWellman.net is going to be my personal blog. The posts here will be about how life looks through my eyes. I want to talk to people here. Those who agree and those who do not agree. I want to be challenged and to challenge my readers.

I believe my life has both meaning and purpose and I believe yours does too!

So, that’s my new purpose here .. hope to talk to you soon!

PS – If you are interested in business my blog for that can be found at Doulos Marketing and if you are interested in my newest project you can find it at Hundred Friends Project.

Building with Purpose

There is this story in the Bible about building. The story speaks to the idea that if a man was going to build a tower, he would certainly need to count the cost of the building so that he would not get half way through and not have enough to finish it. He would be seen as a foolish man for doing such a thing.

For the longest time, as I thought about that story, I thought only of the price of the tower as the “cost” he was to count. While I understand that this is absolutely the primary interpretation of this passage (Luke 14:25-35, by the way) the bigger consideration might well be if he has the passion to fulfill his purpose for the tower.

No one builds things for no reason and the reason for building the tower has to be powerful enough to get the builder through all of the difficult times that will surly come through the course of the project. Even with plenty of money, the stress of building without purpose (or a half-hearted purpose) would never withstand the whole process.

In the end, building with purpose (created by your passion) is the key ingredient in helping you become successful in anything God leads you to do. So, take time to think things through and make sure that God has directed you and filled you with passion and purpose. Otherwise, when you quit halfway through, your testimony will be damaged and people’s confidence in you will be hard to repair.

Planning for a great week!

Mondays seem to come and go faster than ever before for me. It seems that I just get past one and the next one is breathing down my neck! Where does the time go?

Well, as inevitable as the next Monday always seems to be, here we stand on this Monday looking forward to a new week. At the beginning of this week I have only three requirements to make this a great week:

1. That I follow God’s lead in all the events of this week. Jesus told his disciples that with God, nothing is impossible; but without him, we can do nothing. Since I want my life to count for something this week, I need to follow his lead.

2. That I makes someone’s life special this week. The greatest of the eternal gifts is love. Love is the end of the law, there is nothing that more reflects God to the world than to love. I want to show someone (or a group of someones) just how much I love them this week.

3. I need to see that my life counts for something this week. Whether it is at church, in business, or at home, I want to look back at this week and know that in the area of my influence, my life mattered. This is not a desire based in pride, rather it is one based in the desire to not just sit by and let the speed and movement of world events control my life. I want to make an impact in my world. I have been commanded to do so and I want to be visibly obedient to that command.

In the end, I am planning for a great week. My prayer for you is that you are too! If enough of us would make every week count to the fullest our world would change right in front of us.

What are your thoughts?
